"Genuine" Improvisation as Communication & Meditation

Improv Panel

"Genuine" Improvising as Communication & Meditation

This session a "workshop-panel." We will sit in a circle. Cabe will accompany us on guitar. We will lightly follow the chords in "Genuine," and take it's lyrics "Our Love is Genuine, & It Is Crystaline!" as inspiration. Attendees will be invited to participate!

Key Takeaways:

  • IMPROVISING IS FOR EVERYONE: Just like little children learn to talk, we learn to improvise! Join the circle as we create a safe space here to explore & improvise.
  • COMMUNICATE WITH WHAT YOU KNOW: Attendees will observe how others use "what they know" to improvise - be it a little or a lot! and will have the opportunity to use what they know to improvise with the group.
  • MINDFULLNESS MEDITATIONS:  We don't often take pause to observe & reflect on our inner thoughts; improvisation is the perfect reason to do this... listen as others describe their inner experience of improvising. Go home with new ideas for how to practice scales & other techniques with improvisation.

HOW DOES THIS WORKSHOP-PANEL ALIGN WITH NFA'S STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION AND THE THEMES OF NFA 2024?

  • While panelists will guide the conversation & offer insights, the conversation will be opened to the circle to share & reflect a variety of experiences.
  • Discussing improvisation allows us to being incorporating a wider variety of music styles & techniques, so that we can enjoy bonding with a wider variety of people through music.
  • The healing quality of music combined with the accessibility of simple improvisation provides an avenue for connecting with others more deeper than with words.

Who?

Vic Wheeler - I look forward to creating a welcoming place for flutists to explore expressing themselves through improvisation with "simple" guidelines. This class is for all skill levels, but advanced flutists may find it to be of particular value for mindfulness, meditation, calming stress, & finding innovative solutions to obstacles.

Cabe Lindsay - Cabe has hosted many song circles. His insight as a song-writer and circle leader is valueable to flutists - he has played not only many times with flute, but also with a wide variety of instruments & skill levels.

Tadeu Coelho - After witnessing Tadeu artfully handle a room full of flutists at "Expanding Our Borders with Free Improvisation" at NFA 2023, I invited him to join me in 2024 for a session discussion & encouraging improvisation! I look forward to not only his skillful playing but his welcoming attitude & admirable knowledge-base!
